Created a public awareness campaign and supported organizational strategy for the Forest Defenders movement.
In 2021, the decentralized civil disobedience movement to protect the last untouched watershed in Fairy Creek, British Columbia, grew into the largest act of civil disobedience in Canadian history. This ancient temperate rainforest—a delicate and diverse ecosystem—was under threat from continued old-growth logging, despite commitments by governmental agencies to preserve it.
Living in British Columbia, I was inspired by the movement and its significance after visiting this untouched wilderness and witnessing close friends and community members participating in peaceful resistance. My involvement included two key contributions: creating a public awareness campaign, Forest Defenders, and collaborating with emergent leadership of the Fairy Creek Blockade / Last Stand for Forests / Rainforest Flying Squad groups to establish foundational communication and organizational strategies during a critical period of growth.
As the movement expanded from hundreds of long-term activists to thousands of engaged citizens, I supported the development of systems that empowered the decentralized coalition to scale effectively. This included onboarding systems, media strategies, secure repositories for citizen footage, and synthesizing feedback across the coalition.
I also helped organize a Vogue photoshoot of front-line forest defenders ~ to support visibility in a moment of media silence.
