DEX.tv

Contributed to the establishment and rapid growth of a virtual financial news network during the global financial crisis in 2008.

In what became my second professional experience in the workforce – post attending Ryerson’s Journalism program – I joined DEX.tv (Brookeshire Media) as a copywriter and editor.

Not realizing the nature of what I was stepping into, I found myself writing financial news segments (online articles and scripts for broadcast anchors) in the heat of the 2008 global financial crisis… talk about crash course in economics.

Over the next six months my role shifted and took many forms as the needs of the organization shifted. We grew from a 30 minute broadcast with six staff to a seven-hour broadcast daily with over 120 staff.

This time was both incredibly fruitful for my professional growth – I learned an incredible amount in a fast paced startup environment, that called for interdisciplinary skills – and unfortunately disappointing to learn the company was being mis-managed. Perhaps even criminally so.

As you can learn below in the news segment, my employment ended abruptly one day as we learned the founders were operating a ponzi scheme, using the broadcasts to manipulate news related to a raw commodities fund they directed in the US.

In the end, the experience also became a crash course on ethical leadership.

My contributions

  • Copywriting and copyediting

  • Digital producer (generating imagery used during broadcasts)

  • Developing processes and support systems

  • Supporting the development of the brand, marketing and website (news platform)

What I loved about this project

  • Similar to my experience interning with Rogers Television a few years prior, having the opportunity to learn and contribute in diverse ways based on demonstrated initiative.

  • This experience became a bridging path for me from a focus on journalism to Creative Direction, after having my natural talent and technical skills identified by a senior mentor.

  • Working in a fast paced production environment! Love this energy, especially supporting ease and flow across the team.

  • Planting the seeds of curiosity about economics, that would lead to work in the future with financial literacy (Startsmart) and blockchain-focused projects.

  • This experience also seeded a long standing passion of supporting ideas getting off the ground in their early stages, from conception to scaling.

"Patricia is one of the most energetic, enthusiastic and understanding people I have ever worked with. Her attention to detail, knowledge and the dedication at which she approached her job made mine and everyone else's job that much easier. ”

– Business Development Manager at Brookshire Media/De (2009)
