Start Smart Program

Designed and developed a national Australian CSR school program promoting financial literacy, in partnership with the Commonweath Bank.

Joining the ChangeLabs team in 2013 as Shared Creative Services Manager (aka directing the creation of programs and hiring/training of facilitators) StartSmart became my first project.

The program was already established and my mandate was two-fold: extend the material into a series of virtual workshops for use in regional and rural communities and review/update the existing in-school program.

The virtual workshop was created on-time and in-budget (a herculean feat at the time), consisting of six workshops: three for primary school and three for secondary school ages. Each 45-60 minutes.

My contributions

  • Leading the project teams and holding responsibility for project success

  • Directing the development of the virtual workshop and update of in-school workshops

What I loved about the project

  • Creating the virtual workshop challenged me to expand into new modalities of creative direction; from gamification to app development, scripting and audio recording to curriculum mapping and engaging panels of Indigenous advisors.

  • The quality of the lessons we produced and the diversity of interdisciplinary talents we were able to engage on the projects

What is the Start Smart Program?

The Start Smart program changes the way young people learn about money. Led the design for the program to make money management interactive, engaging and fun through a series of free in-person workshops and online resources. Start Smart reaches over 500,000 students in Australia each year, making it the largest program of its kind in the world.

“ Patricia has brought a new depth of professional understanding and experience to Shared Creative Services – she just knows what quality looks, sounds and feels like. This knowledge has manifested itself in countless ways, but one example must take precedence.

Patricia has an enviable grasp on how to engage suppliers. In our work we contract out tasks as varied as voice-over recording, PowerPoint slide building and financial literacy research. Still, no matter what the job, Patricia handles our suppliers with a combination of diligence and firmness that means they come away thrilled to have worked with ChangeLabs and we gets the result required to succeed, every time.

Patricia has also succeeded in applying organisational discipline to our creative endeavours. This discipline has taken a number of forms, including: the institution of a systematic (and actually practical!) client briefing process, detailed and dynamic project plans that are sensitive to the realities of creative work and effective time-logging procedures”
